Abstract:

The Rosene family papers document the travels of Russell David Rosene (b. 1922) and Juanita Haupt Rosene (b. 1927) and their children in the United States, the Alaska Territory, Mexico, and Central America. The Rosenes were foreign aid workers for the American Friends Service Committee and produced educational film strips for the Los Angeles City School District. Russ Rosene wrote freelance travel articles and personal columns. He also worked on an oil tanker and as a merchant marine radioman during World War II. The audiodiscs contain a recording entitled "Rosene Party". The audiotape reel contains (according to a list enclosed in the autiotape reel box) recordings of the following: Banana train; Banana train conveyor; Managua-near waterfront; Izalco Volcano; El Salvador at night; Dynamite in Guatemala; bulldozers and road scrapers; traffic; entertainers-Nicaragua; music from radio; native Marimba-Guatemala; market sounds in Chichicastanengo; corn grinder in Chichicastanengo; funeral dirge in Chichicastanengo; Guatemala City traffic; San Jose city traffic; Siren (noon), Managua; train leaving station, Managua; school children singing, El Salvador; school teacher reciting, El Salvador. Audiotape reel is stored in box 1.
